Multi-surface Vacuum Cleaner Buying Guide
No matter how many vacuum cleaners are out there, they all fall into two categories:
- Lift Away: It can handle various floor types as well as rugs, carpets, and furniture.
- Wet/Dry Vacuum: this is basically a vacuum and a mop all in the same body. It comes in handy when you have little time for doing two tasks separately.
The more accessories the vacuum cleaner comes with, the more places it can clean. Most models have a head for carpets and one for hard flooring. Some are equipped with a crevice tool and a dusting tool.

The Dyson V8 is cordless and can run continuously for 40 minutes with the main head on and 25 minutes with the motorized floor tool attachment.
This much time is quite impressive as not many models can remain a good suction for this long.

A major setback when using a Shark Navigator is its weight. This machine is heavier than most of the vacuum cleaners we have used. To make up to this nuisance, it does the job well. Its suction is greater than that of many other models on the same price range.
The canister comes out easily and you can empty it with ease. Sometimes users have to take it out and carry with them while doing the cleaning.
Although it’s not too heavy but it still makes users feel less comfortable than with other models.

It’s sturdy enough to give a feeling of a long lasting tool but it’s also lightweight and compact.
It comes with its own plastic tray to air dry the attachment. Its long cord is useful in reaching higher places.
A nice minor feature is how the buttons light up when you trigger the cleaner. Not a big advantage but it gives a feeling of a professional design.
The Bissell CrossWave can be pet owners’ biggest life saver.
Imagine you are running late for something but suddenly you notice dog pee on the floor.
This vacuum cleaner can make the problem goes away in less than 1 minute while a task that would take up to 20 minutes if you do it manually with paper towels and sponges.
And that’s not all.

4. Hoover CH30000 PortaPower Lightweight Commercial Canister Vacuum
The Hoover CH30000 is another compact and lightweight model. It has just enough suction for home use and some extra nozzles for various surfaces.
The first time we laid our eyes on its bag, we were skeptical as it looked so small that we doubted it can handle a 2 bedroom apartments.
However, the bag is capacious enough for up to 3 bedrooms. Emptying and cleaning the bag is also easy.
The biggest drawback we notice is how powerful it blows out. This force is so strong that it can disperse dust behind you. Other than that, what you should be aware of is this Hoover is not for deep pile carpets.
- A 30 foot long cord.
- Portable and compact.
- Decent suction.
- Easy to empty bag.
- Good value for money.
- Good for low-pile carpet only.
- Blow out too hard.
5. Hoover Platinum Collection Lightweight Bagged Upright with Canister
Another lightweight Hoover model, it has a great suction for home use and a long cord for convenience.
However, its biggest problem also lies with the cord. Once the cord is clogged, there is no way you can unclog it on your own.
Other benefits of this Hoover include a sealed bag system, cheap spare bags, and easy to use handle control.
Users with respiratory problems will love this Hoover as it dust bag will trap all the particles inside, a nice touch in our opinion. If you ever feel the need of replacing the bag, the new ones don’t cost you an arm and a leg.
The long 5 year warranty time is also a plus. However, please note that this doesn’t cover situations at which you use this machine for commercial purposes.
However, it has neither a brush roll nor a motorized brush so it cannot handle thick carpet or bare floor.
- Dirt is kept inside the bag by a sealing system.
- Reasonable priced bags.
- Long power cord.
- Convenient handle control.
- Long warranty time.

This Dyson Ball is not as powerful as its brother, the Dyson Ball Animal 2, but it still has enough suction for regular home use.
If you have ever had a problem with moving a vacuum cleaner around, you will be pleased to know that this Dyson Ball has a good maneuverability and is capable of cleaning a decent variety of floor types.
Although the machine can be moved easily on most surfaces, it has difficulty doing the same thing on deep pile carpet.
One of our favorite features of this Dyson Ball is the perimeter on the cleaner head. It lifts or lowers the head according to the floor you are cleaning.
The lack of height control is a small downside to this otherwise good vacuum cleaner. To solve this problem, you can raise the cord yourself, a bit of extra work, we know, but it’s effective.
- Excellent suction.
- Operate quietly.
- Easy to empty and clean canister.
- Good maneuverability.
- Can fall over when you use the hose.
- Difficult to move on deep carpet.

Heavyweight is the downside of most upright vacuum cleaners but it’s not true with this Bissell upright zing bagless.
This model weight merely 8 pounds and has a handle for easy carry. To add to its accessibility benefits, it comes with four wheels for even greater mobility.
This Bissell is suitable for stairs, upholstery and floors, but it has difficulty dealing with hard surfaces for the lack of brush roll.
This is another great model for people with respiratory ailments as the dirt is trapped inside a paper bag so you are not exposed to them while disposing the bag. The downside is the extra cost for purchasing bags.
- Good suction.
- Portable and lightweight.
- The paper bag makes sure you don’t have personal contact with the dirt.
- The attachments are not as good as expected.
- Unable to clean hard surfaces.
8. Hoover Wind Tunnel Air Steerable Pet Bagless Corded Upright Vacuum UH72405PC
Hoover has another model made it to this list. The Wind Tunnel is lightweight and mobile as it’s extremely easy to move around.
We highly recommend this model for homes with pets like cats or dogs. The excellent suction makes removing pet hair an ease.
If you have carpets and want to find vacuum cleaner that is designed for them, the Hoover Wind Tunnel fits the bill.
However, it isn’t without drawbacks. Using the Hoover Wind Tunnel on furniture isn’t as straightforward as with other surfaces. You have to move it back and forth repeatedly, obviously an extra work for you.
This Hoover isn’t a noisy cleaner but it makes a squealing sound that bothers me a lot. We don’t know if it’s supposed to be that way or we do something wrong. If you are fine with the noise, this is not a problem anymore.
Another feature we am not so keen on is the way the canister is emptied. We thought when we opened, all the dirt must come out clean but it didn’t. We ended up using our hand taking the rest out.
- Lightweight and portable.
- Long cord.
- Operate quietly.
- Excellent for pet homes and carpets.
- Good suction.
- The canister is hard to clean thoroughly.
- Extra work on furniture.
- Has a squealing sound (this is a drawback or not depending on how sensitive you are to noise).
9. BISSELL 3106-Q Featherweight Lightweight Vacuum
This vacuum cleaner can work on multi surfaces but it is especially suitable for wood floors or kitchen floors.
We know the pain of hovering your vacuum cleaner’s head under yucky corners and still cannot suck all the dirt out.
But with the Bissell 3106-Q, this task becomes easier than ever. Dirt, flour, and chopped herbs, it can pick up them all with ease.
This model is lightweight yet very strong and has a long cord. We find these two features beneficial in cleaning the stairs.
The 3106-Q has a nice collection of accessories. All of them are also lightweight so even if you fix them on, they don’t add much extra weight. Attaching and removing them are easy too.
We highly regard how portable this model is. Even when we attach everything on, the machine still fits a closet.
This model doesn’t have buttons on the handle so if you want to adjust something; the only option is to bend over. Another thing we am keen of is that it doesn’t have a motorized brush so cleaning bare floor is out of the question.
- Less expensive than other models on this list.
- Versatile and suitable for different surfaces.
- There is no switch or button on the handle.
- No motorized brush.
10. Hoover Vacuum Cleaner WindTunnel MAX Pet Plus Multi-Cyclonic Corded Bagless Upright Vacuum UH70605
If you have read review on this Hoover Vacuum Cleaner, you may notice that people complain so much about the noise it makes that it sound like a lawn mower.
While we do notice the noise, we don’t think it’s as bad as they said. Of course it’s not the quietest vacuum cleaner ever but it’s not the noisiest either.
While this model isn’t a perfect vacuum cleaner, it does what it’s supposed to do very well.
You would be surprised at the amount of dirt it sucks up. Many users reported that even though they had used other models with a higher price, they thought this model did a better job.
The assembly process is quick too. Everything falls apart easily for cleaning and snaps back together after some simple steps.
An apparent drawback in our opinion is the cord retraction. The manual says it retracts quicker than usual but we don’t think it’s as good as they say.
- Great suction. This much force is suitable for pet hair.
- Simple assembly.
- Has a roller brush for hair.
- Easy to move on some types of carpets.
